ABSNC Standard Revisions Update

Thank you to all of the ABSNC stakeholders who responded to the request for public comment on Standard 6 as well as concerns related to diversity, equity and inclusion. Details regarding the changes to the Standards can be reviewed here. All additions and deletions are noted and highlighted:

  • The revised standards include an “Introduction”.
  • Standard 6 has been simplified to provide for minimum requirements. Individual organization may determine additional eligibility criteria that may be fitting for the specialty.
  • Standards 1, 4, 7, 8, 12, and 13 have been updated to encourage organizations to consider matters of diversity, equity and inclusion without imposing burdensome requirements. Updates in this area were carefully considered by the ABSNC Diversity Task Group and approved by the ABSNC Board, following the engagement of a diversity consultant, who provided ABSNC with thoughtful counsel.

“The standards are designed to guide organizations in developing certification programs that are rigorous and reflective of modern practice, but also equitable, inclusive, and responsive to the evolving needs of nurses and the diverse populations they serve.”

The effective date for the new standards is April 1, 2026.
